Adult Dilemmas In Managing Eczema

Many people discount eczema as a minor irritation or inconvenience. They do not fully appreciate the extent to which it can affect a person's normal functioning. In addition to the physical appearance and discomfort of it, the red, itchy, dry and inflamed skin also exacts a psychological toll on the lives of its sufferers.

In 2004 the National Eczema Society in conjunction with a series of global patient support groups backed a study that was the biggest and most comprehensive study of its kind ever conducted anywhere in the world. The study, called ISOLATE which stood for International Study Of Life with ATopic Eczema, examined the emotional and psychological cost of living with the most widespread type of eczema, atopic eczema. Two thousand individuals participated in the study hailing from eight different countries, including Spain, France, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Mexico, the United States, and the UK. They chose a cross-section of people, some suffering from moderate eczema, all the way up to those who suffered with the most severe cases of eczema.

The study showed that twenty-five percent of the people interviewed had endured teasing or bullying by others because of their skin condition. For a number of people whose eczema began in childhood and improved only slightly as they aged, their problems continued into adulthood. Many people interviewed for the study believed their skin condition was a "curse" that had charted the course of their lives and wrought havoc at every bend in the road. For example, many people described workplace-related problems wherein they endured cruel comments, constant stares and a lack of knowledge about the disorder. Many of their co-workers mistakenly believed that by touching a surface, such as a chair or desk, that the eczema patient had touched, they could contract the disease.

Besides the blatant workplace discrimination, one in seven patients interviewed strongly believed that their skin condition thwarted their careers. Many cited problems surviving job interviews, as well as feeling that their choice of careers was limited, not because of lack of experience, knowledge, or education but because of their skin condition.

An eczema patient's can also suffer in their personal life. Many sufferers reported that dating and in some cases the decisionto remain single was related to their skin disorder. One in four people interviewed strongly believed that finding a mate was made difficult because of their skin condition and forty-three percent admitted to feeling insecure and awkward in intimate situations, especially when suffering the worst flare-ups. Many eczema patients suffer from a caseof low self-esteem, and have constant bouts of depression, as well as embarrassment and frustration at their life situation because of their skin condition. Many people suffering from this skin condition feel many areas of their lives are impacted. While it may be a physical problem, it easily becomes a psychological quandry. The ISOLATE survey found that three out of four eczema patients interviewed admitted that, "Being able to control their eczema effectively would be the single most important improvement to their quality of life."

Hormonal Changes Effects On Eczema

Hormones play an important role in a woman’s life. Hormones are working to full capacity when a girl begins to menstruate, each time she menstruates, during pregnancy and when a woman is enduring menopause. Some women report that pregnancy causes their eczema to flare-up, while other women see a great deal of improvement in their skin condition.

The human endocrine system consists of both hormone-manufacturing tissues and organs. Hormones are natural chemicals produced in one place, secreted into the bloodstream, then used by specific other target organs and systems. It is the hormones that enable the target organs to do their work. Some of the organ systems use hormones as well as their own internal control systems. Aging and body changes occur in the management of the systems are managed. Unfortunately, some tissues have a habit of developing decreased sensitivity to the individual hormone that controls them.

As time progresses and a woman ages and goes through different stages in her life, the hormone blood levels change. Some increase while others decrease and still other see no change. Hormones commonly metabolize at a very slow rate. The hormone-manufacturing organs in the body are, in many cases, controlled by yet other hormones. Aging and reproductive cycle changes play a role in all of this. To use an example, endocrine tissues very often produce a decreased amount of hormone in middle age as compared with how much it produced when the individual was younger, but in other incidences it might produce the same quantity over the years but do so at a much decreased rate of speed.

For eczema sufferers, a good rule of thumb is to not begin any new types of therapies for your condition while you are enduring a hormonal change. For example, do not begin ultraviolet therapy, topical immunomodulators or steroid creams while waiting for your menstrual cycle because hormonal changes could wreak havoc with your desired results. It is best to wait until a few weeks after menstruation is passed.

Pregnancy in particular causes hormones to enter a state of flux. A woman’s heart sees a great increase in the volume of blood when she is pregnant and this increase in both blood and hormone production can bring about skin changes. These changes are not standard across all women. Some women’s eczema skin becomes flakier, drier and itchier while others find that their natural oil level is plentiful. It is extremely important to continue with regular visits to your doctor or dermatologist during pregnancy to keep abreast of your skin changes, whether it be improvements or increased breakouts.

Menopause causes great hormone changes and eczema-prone skin needs some extra tender loving care. However, when it comes to eczema, is not as common in women of menopausal age. Atopic eczema is very rare in menopausal women whereas varicose and discoid eczema are increasely common among this age group. After the end of menopause many women have lesser amounts of the hormones estrogen, estradiol and prolactin.

Select An Earth Friendly Product: Good For Your Health, Good For The Environment

Our earth is everyone’s responsibility. We all want to have a healthy environment to pass on to our children, but it can often seem like eco-friendly behavior is difficult to attain. Environmentally conscious consumers will be happy to hear that more and more earth friendly product lines are being developed to make healthy living simple and convenient.

Living an earth loving life is not just good for the environment in the long run, it is also good for your health immediately. The chemical products that have become so ubiquitous in our society’s day to day life are making people very sick. Research is now linking chemicals found in everyday household products to a prevalence of allergic reactions, occurrences of asthmatic attacks, and even the rise of cancer. An earth friendly product provides a healthy alternative that will work great and not make people sick.

There are many harmful aspects of our homes that we have little control over. It is unfortunate, but many of us live in homes that were built in ways that are not ecologically friendly. Although many people are not aware of it, their homes are filled with pollutants in the form of paint, fabrics, and the very building materials that hold up the roof. These products emit fumes and gases that actually cause the air inside a house to be more polluted than the air outside.

Although homeowners tend to start in an environmental deficit, this does not mean that they cannot make their houses healthy over time. Natural home products have been developed for all aspects of life, including home building materials, chemical free cleaning products, organic foods, natural beauty products, and environmentally friendly fabrics. By always selecting an earth friendly product, consumers can ensure that everything new entering the house will contribute to the overall good of the family’s health and the environment’s future.

There is now no excuse for using chemical based products. First, it is easy to find retailers that carry natural products. Shoppers no longer have to go to specialty stores because the earth friendly product they desire is likely stocked on their local store’s shelf and can even be found online. Second, as the products gain strong fan bases, clear favorites are starting to stand out. Next time you are out shopping, look to see which products most people are reaching for. Finally, unlike before, natural products are very competitively priced, making them affordable for all budgets.

Finding A Natural Cure For Asthma

Asthma – a disease of the respiratory system whereby a patient’s airway becomes inflamed and constricted limiting breathing – can be enormously frightening. The lack of control that comes from having your own breath leave you is something only an asthma sufferer can understand.

The treatments sought for asthma include a number of highly successful and reliable medical interventions. Asthma patients often rely on respiratory inhalers and prescription medications to easy asthma symptoms and prevent attacks. Further, for those asthma patients whose condition is exacerbated by environmental stimuli, avoidance of allergens becomes a main focus of daily life.

Today – as the emphasis on healthy living becomes more prominent – more and more people are looking for a natural cure for asthma. And they’re finding them; ways to alleviate symptoms and prevent attacks. The natural cure for asthma derives from a holistic approach to treating the whole body, thus correcting specific symptoms.

One approach to a natural cure for asthma that has been embraced is chiropractic work. Patients report a greater overall feeling of well-being after visiting with a chiropractor. Chiropractic manipulation works to align the spinal column thus removing pressure from the nervous system. Because our central nervous system is all connected along the spine, we can be enormously benefited by having adjustments.

Another approach to a natural cure for asthma is acupuncture whereby sterilized needles are placed – painlessly – in strategic areas of the body to correct internal imbalances.

Additionally, many in search of a natural cure for asthma have found that certain types of exercise – most specifically yoga – have relieved their asthma symptoms. Again, overall health in the body addresses many symptoms.

Others have found non-traditional techniques such as hypnosis and laser treatments to clear airways very successful in their search for a natural cure for asthma.

To research a natural cure for asthma, go online; there are many resources available for those who suffer from asthma including a multitude of chat forums wherein other people share their experiences and what has worked to ease their asthma symptoms. Having support from people who understand can be more than half the battle.

No matter what you choose in your journey to alleviate your asthma, always check with a medical professional prior to experimentation. It may be that you can use any of the methods mentioned above in conjunction with traditional medical treatment. Either way, staying proactive and positive will one day find you enjoying a much healthier life.

Chickenpox Transmission Methods

Chickenpox is a very common and highly contagious disease that is often called one of the classic children's diseases, because so many people contract it during their childhood. Rare but serious complications can be caused by the disease that require immediate medical attention. The best method for avoiding chickenpox is to receive a chickenpox immunization. The most common chickenpox symptoms are fever, headache, stomach ache, and loss of appetite, followed by an itchy rash of blisters, generally lasting for 2 to 4 days. The cause of chicken pox is the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Another name for this virus is human herpes virus 3 (HHV-3), a member of the herpes family that causes herpes zoster, also known as shingles, in adults. Chickenpox is highly contagious, and the chickenpox virus can be transmitted by numerous methods including airborne transmission, direct contact, and droplet transmission.

Some children who have received the varicella vaccination may develop a slight case of chickenpox as subsequent to the vaccination. However, these children usually contract much milder symptoms, develop only a few dozen chickenpox blisters, and recover far more rapidly than unvaccinated chickenpox sufferers. However, these mild, post-vaccination cases of chickenpox are still highly contagious. In a person is infected with chickenpox, the symptoms and blisters usually manifest between 10 and 21 days following exposure. However, people are contagious 1 to 2 days before the rash and blisters emerge and remain contagious while any un-crusted blisters are present.

After you have contracted chickenpox, the virus normally remains in your body for your lifetime, being kept under control by your immune system. Approximately 10% of adults may contract shingles which is also caused by the chickenpox virus. This happens when the varicella virus overcomes the immune system and becomes active during periods of stress. This particularly affects older people, later in life.

The most common chickenpox sufferers are children under 10 years old. In these children, the disease is usually presents mild symptoms, however, in very rare case, serious complications can develop. Adults and older children usually develop more severe cases of chickenpox. Due to the immunity they receive from their mothers, children under one year of age, whose mothers have previously had chickenpox or have previously received the chickenpox vaccination, are unlikely to contract the disease. If they do contract chickenpox, it is normally a very mild case. However, for children under one year of age whose mothers have not had chickenpox or have not been vaccinated for chickenpox, or whose inborn immunity has already waned, a severe case of the chickenpox can develop. Normally, children will develop 250-500 blisters during the course of the chickenpox, however, children afflicted with additional skin problems, such as eczema or recent sunburn, may get more than 1,500 chickenpox blisters.

Rare but serious and severe complications are more common in those with weakened or compromised immune systems from things such as medicines, disease, or treatments like chemotherapy. Some of the most severe cases of chickenpox have been observed in children who have been administered steroids, such as in the treatment of asthma, prior to developing symptoms, during the disease's incubation period.

It seems that every day brings the advent of some new weight loss product that promises to help us shed pounds and get healthy in one fell swoop. It’s no wonder that we’re all so confused. But those who understand the components of healthy weight loss know that a focus on natural, whole foods can increase your body’s health and bring you to a weight that’s appropriate for you. Many natural food enthusiasts continue to tout the benefits of the green tea diet – using the natural characteristics of green tea to speed the metabolism and achieve optimal health.

It seems that each study yields more benefits of the green tea diet. For instance, green tea – a natural and aggressive antioxidant – will cleanse your body of impurities and help keep your system balanced. The benefits of this are increased immunity against a variety of viruses and bacteria. In fact, some recent studies have shown the promise of a green tea diet in warding off such conditions as Alzheimer’s because of the tea’s ability to fight off certain chemicals that cause plaque build-up on the brain.

Additionally, a green tea diet will afford you a speedier metabolism as green tea has been shown to effectively raise metabolic levels. However, for those who must stay away from caffeine, the green tea diet is not for you. Green tea does contain caffeine but is certainly a superlative choice to coffee in addressing your body’s overall health.

Participants in a green tea diet can sip the beverage after meals to help aid digestion and keep metabolic rates increased. Or try substituting your morning coffee with a cup of green tea.

The green diet is in no way a substitute for overall healthy eating and plenty of physical activity. But it can be a component of your new lifestyle of healthy living.

Choosing A Weight Loss Surgeon

If you are considering weight loss surgery, it is vital to locate a well-qualified surgeon that has successfully performed countless numbers of these types of surgeries. As these surgeries are increasing in popularity, more insurance companies are beginning to cover their cost. This has resulted in an influx of doctors who are willing to perform weight loss surgeries. While most of these doctors are probably well-qualified, it is important to ensure your surgery will be performed by someone extremely knowledgeable about this particular surgery.

One way to locate a good weight loss surgeon is to get recommendations. You might have family members, friends, or colleagues who have undergone the surgery. Question them about their doctors to determine which doctor they have had good experiences with. Most patients are very forthcoming about their knowledge about a doctor they have used. Many people get their referral through their primary care physician. More than likely your primary care doctor knows and can recommend a surgeon that performs weight loss surgeries. Ask your doctor for several names so you are equipped to compare various doctors' experiences and qualifications. Remember that you are not required to use the surgeon recommended by your doctor. Many times, primary care doctors will recommend another doctor based on factors other than experience or skills. They may recommend someone with whom they are friends or because they do not know anyone else.

After you have pared down your selection to a few names, you will need to verify the doctor's qualifications. The first thing you will want to ascertain is how many weight loss surgeries the doctor has performed in the past. This factor is critical. Some studies have indicated that doctors who perform only a handful of weight loss surgeries per year have higher mortality rates than those who perform many weight loss surgeries yearly. Determine how long they have been conducting the surgeries and the number they perform in an average month.

The next factor you will want to ensure is if your surgeon is board-certified. Typically a surgeon is certified by the surgical board approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties. This would indicate that the doctor has completed the required number of years of residency in their field and has taken an exam to test their knowledge. Also, find out whether the doctor is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. If so, the letters, F.A.C.S. will appear printed following the doctor's name. This means that the surgeon has sat for and passed an in-depth evaluation of both their professional and ethical standards and that they come recommended. You can ask your surgeon directly whether he or she is a member or you can call the American College of Surgeons to find out. Many surgeons are also members of additional medical societies. Their goals are to support doctors and their profession. Membership in many of these requires continuing education and the societies also provide peer reviews to help maintain their high standards.

After you have decided whether or not you are considering a well-qualified surgeon, the next thing to do is to consider the location for the performance of the surgery. Will you have your surgery in a hospital or a surgery center? For how long will you be required to remain in the facility and is the staff courteous and professional? These factors can make a big difference in the success of your hospital procedure.

Get Back to Nature with an Alternative Health Supplement

With obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other ailments on the rise, it is no wonder that there are tons of synthetically formulated concoctions purported to help us lose fat, gain muscle mass, boost the immune system, increase the respiratory system's efficiency, and so on. But with such a push for healthy bodies, why are so many of these "healthy" supplements made up of ingredients that do not occur outside of a laboratory?

To be certain, it is great that you want to boost your health. But think about an alternative health supplement before you place a mail order for the newest pills on the market. After all, doesn't nature know better than all of those unpronounceable chemicals? Consider this: if the reason you are purchasing man-made supplements is to feel good and be healthy, then would it not make more sense to consume all natural health boosters as an alternative health supplement?

Think about it — Chinese medicine has always relied on naturally occurring herbs, oils, and so forth for boosting the health. How many supplements are billed as using traditional Chinese medicinal therapies for inspiration? There must be a reason. The Chinese, did, in fact, figure out thousands of years ago that an alternative health supplement created from natural ingredients can be used not only to heal and improve the body, but they can also be used in lieu of adding more unnatural substances to the body. Again, it seems nature knows better than any synthetic chemical how best to support the human machine.

Overall, an alternative health supplement is the best choice for getting back to nature and back to healthy living. Chemicals and foreign substances are what need to be taken out of the body, not added to it. An alternative health supplement is just the answer to a healthy body and clean living. Natural herbs, natural oils, natural plants and flowers and seeds — these are the medicines and therapies that the human body can thrive on, rather than artificially created ones. Nature made is best for supporting the health of the body, and an alternative health supplement will support that means to an end.

Fitness - A Wise Investment

Imagine if an old friend were to confide in you about an investment that was impossible to fail...how would you react? Also suppose there was a huge amount of supporting evidence for the investment claims...wouldn't you be inclined to take advantage of the opportunity and not miss out on the rewards? Although the answer to these questions seems obvious, when it comes to investing in our health and quality of life we often choose to ignore what obviously works. Take for example, exercise...

Physical fitness may be the ultimate investment opportunity. Think of it this way. If you are willing to make the commitment (investment), you will feel and look healthier, have an abundance of energy, be more self-confident, more productive and discover a more joyous and fulfilling life. These are rewards that money cannot buy and the substance of high quality living. And, the investment of exercise becomes even more attractive when you consider that there is absolutely no down-side risk. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. How much better can it get? How many times can you remember ever having a better offer? The honest answer is probably never, and yet many of us fail to act on this extraordinary opportunity. We simply choose to procrastinate or ignore the proven benefits of exercise!

Here are a few reasons that sometimes inhibit our willingness to "step out" and make a change or take a chance:

Sometimes our vision gets clouded. We lose tract of what is really important. Forget about the less important activities that tend to clutter our daily routine and focus on exactly what needs to be accomplished to reach your goal.

Looking at the "big" picture can seem overwhelming. And the bigger the task, the more overwhelming it can seem. Break the task apart into smaller pieces. If you want to lose 50 pounds try losing 10 pounds and repeat the process five times! Need to start an exercise program? Begin with short, simple exercises and then slowly expand your routine. Don't exercise too hard when first starting-out or you will become stiff, tired, disillusioned and soon quit.

Have you ever not wanted to start something for fear of failure? Take the first step, acknowledge the fear and the next step will come easier. Once fears are acknowledged, they usually quiet down.

Sometimes we start to think that a task is unpleasant or boring. Just like any other activity, this can also be true for exercise. There are days when we just plain lack the enthusiasm and motivation to continue. It's part of human nature. On days like these focus on 'why' you are doing it. Think about all the people you care about and who may need and rely on you. What would happen if you became ill or disabled and was unable to work for a period of time, or worse, if you were out of the picture completely. How would things change? If something happened tomorrow, how would your family or business manage without you? What do you want your life to be like in the future? There are many tasks or chores we do, that we may not like, but are necessary to live a happen and productive life. Focus on the bigger picture.

Indecision can be defeating, but doing "anything" is better than doing nothing. There are no wrong choices and very few choices that can't be undone or done again. Can't decide on a particular exercise program or routine? Pick a few exercises and start with something simple. If you don't like it, go on to the next exercise.

When you lack the confidence to start something new, take a deep breath and try to figure out why. Are you hesitating because you really lack the skill or is it just imagined? If it's real, try to find out where to gain the skills you need or find someone with the right skills who can help. In the case of exercise, finding a qualified personal fitness trainer can sometimes do the trick, but be wary...some PFT's are overzealous and tend to start newcomers on programs that are too strenuous.

Life just seems too busy to find time for some activities. Large, uninterrupted chunks of time are very hard to come by. And if we're honest, when they do come, we'd rather do something totally pleasurable! Exercise has to become part of your routine. It can't be an option. Make it a high priority just the same as your career, and other areas of interest. You will be surprised at how easy exercise becomes when approached this way!

Have you ever subconsciously (or otherwise) invited distractions so that you have a "good" reason not to get something done? Sometimes it's the simple things like answering the phone or sitting down to watch that "one" TV program, that distract us. When you find yourself doing this, take control of the situation and make a conscious decision to do what you are avoiding.

To get the full benefits of exercise, or any other fitness endeavor, you must agree to become a willing participant. This will require commitment on your part. And remember, as you embark on your mission you are investing in something near and dear to your own heart...your life and a future of healthy living.

A Healthy Approach to the Pursuit of Creating Wealth

Can being sound in health make you wealthy? It follows that in order to enjoy one you would want the other and vice versa. Most proponents of the way to wealth from a mind, body, and spirit approach may not realize they use this as their mantra.

The way to wealth using a mind, body, and spirit approach might be easier on the nerves than 24/7 aggression. Steady progress towards achievable goals is easier on the mind and spirit, not to mention the body. Stress wears people out and tears them up inside.

The way to wealth may not be as swift as most people would like. But for the body life is a long journey and the health of the mind and spirit must travel within. As many people soon learn, wealth does not exclude ill health or an unhealthy mind. Wealth does not prevent illness or mental instability.

What could be more tragic than amassing wealth to enjoy the beauty life offers, only to be frustrated by an unsound body or a mind that won't support healthy living? Therefore, it makes sense that the way to wealth uses a mind, body, and spirit approach.

The way to wealth takes hard work and dedication, and often sacrifice. All these factors can contribute to wear and tear on the body and mind. The pursuit of wealth can wear down the spirit. But often the spirit can inspire the body, and mental strength can inspire even weak-minded people to reach their goals.

The way to wealth is the subject of many books, and the motive of many people in life. Equally important is the maintenance of a healthy body, a robust spirit, and an active mind. Some people might view a healthy trinity of mind, body, and spirit as wealth in and of itself.

The way to wealth can change over time into an increased appreciation for other things. Many wealthy people would give everything they have to be healthy again, and many people with great intelligence wish their bodies were healthy enough to sustain longer life. So if wealth is the ownership of the rarest elements, then those in possession of a healthy body, spirit, and mind can be considered already wealthy.

Your Weight Loss Goals for 2007

There is no ideal weight that suits everybody. Each person has a different body and their healthy weight will be determined by different factors.

Unfortunately, the affects of being too heavy can (and does) impact our "social status" in the world around us. Right or wrong, overweight individuals tend to suffer more not only in the health department, but at work and at play.

Nowadays, there is more pressure than ever to lose weight. While a majority of us can admit to the fact that yes, it is better to feel good (and hence look "better"), there is no getting away from the TV commercials and written ads that do more than hint at the fact that if you are at your ideal weight you earn more respect and/or can have more friends. Frankly, there is no end to the come-ons we hear to be slim and trim, to lose weight.

While we are bombarded with weight loss ads, there is one vital factor associated with maintaining a healthy weight that is true. By reaching the proper weight for oneself, the individual more often than not has more energy and overall better health. No one can deny that carrying excessive amounts of body fat puts undue pressure on various vital organs. Our hearts must work harder. All human body organs are put under undue stress due to excessive weight.

We have all witnessed at one time or another the sacrifices of other people (or ourselves!) who have tried to eat the right foods and find time to exercise. Some individuals carry this to an extreme where they will even starve themselves or binge and purge. All for the sake of trying to lose a few pounds. Again, unfortunately, these individuals are not achieving optimum health but instead putting their very lives in jeopardy. And, even if one manages to lose weight typically that weight loss comes right back. A depressing scenario.

So what can an individual do to achieve weight loss when watching our caloric intact and getting some exercise just does not seem to be enough?

Mother nature may have the answer. There has been a huge influx of different types of herbal weight loss products. These herbal weight loss products have changed in the last century, but the pitches remain the same. Indeed, many herbs, supplements, and diet pills promise results that would put even the most efficient tape worms to shame. Of course it's no secret that many of these products are fraudulent. But is it possible that a few of them really can live up to their claims?

It is interesting to note that a few of the weight loss products on the market today do have the backing and support of pharmaceutical companies. Is it because weight loss products are "big business" or because they work?

The jury is still out. But the fact remains that better health can be achieved through proper weight loss. If you are overweight, making that resolution to achieve better health will be the finest gift you can give yourself. Find the proper combination of natural nutrition, and exercise, and include herbal weight loss supplements best suited to your individual needs.

A healthy new you and New Year is right around the corner!

Petals For Your Tea

I'm sure you've heard about green teas. And you've probably have had your share of iced teas. But have you tried flower teas? Never? With the mad rush to drink green tea as recommended by every fitness and healthy living nut, it's no wonder that flower teas and its benefits are paid little attention.

Let me clue you in about flower teas. Flower teas are mainly of Chinese origin. They are essentially green teas (like the ones advocated for fitness and healthy living) scented and enriched with flower oils. Jasmine blossoms are the flowers usually used for flower teas. The flowers bloom nightly and they are put in an area that is quite cool until nightfall. Just before they bloom, they are placed on heaps of dried and heated leaves of good-quality green tea. As a result, the leaves take on and absorb fragrant oils from the flowers. When the flowers and leaves heat up again, they are re-arranged for the next cycle of scenting. Ordinary flower teas are scented for only 2 or 3 times while special teas are scented for up to 7 times.

For fitness and healthy living, flower teas are highly prescribed by Asian medicine. Because in addition to green tea benefits, flower teas also have benefits from flowers. In particular, jasmine tea is especially good for anti-aging, digestive problems, and as an anti-bacterial drink. First, it improves the body's defense system against diseases by boosting body immunity. Second, flower teas also raises the body's chances against cancers and heart ailments. Studies have shown that flower teas actually prevent bad cholesterol absorption by keeping the walls of blood vessels from rigidity. It also prevents mutation of cells which causes cancer. Abdominoplasty Or The Tummy Tuck

Abdomens come in many different shapes and sizes. They are affected by many environmental factors such as gravity, age, and pregnancies which all take their toll on their appearance. Our perception of normal is influenced by television and magazines. Selecting the right surgeon is very important as not all surgeons offer identical tummy tuck or abdominoplasty methods. We have three dimensional bodies. Excess sagging tissue often extends from the front, the sides and the back of the body. Surgery can treat these problems by sculpting some areas and leaving certain parts alone.

Tummy tucks can be very rewarding as long as the patient understands the risk and potential complications. It is essential that a patient is aware about the risks involved with all surgical procedures. Your chosen surgeon should be willing to discuss and review all abdominoplasty risks with you. Prior to surgery, your surgeon should perform a thorough medical examination of his or her patient in order to identify whether that patient poses an increased risk for complications.

Prior to surgery, anesthesia will be administered. Anesthesia in itself carries risks during and following the tummy tuck surgery. Surgery also carries a risk of infection and blood clots. Blood clots and normally be avoided by making sure the patient begins moving as soon as possible following the abdominoplasty. Conditions such as poor healing might require another surgery and it is recommended that you discuss this with the surgeon before the abdominoplasty commences.

The variety of tummy tuck surgery a patient will receive depends upon the quantity of fat deposits found in their abdominal area. Fat quantity will also determine which surgery will be the most effective. During your initial consultation you will learn the benefits of the tummy tuck. The surgeon should conduct a full evaluation of the patient's health and lifestyle to determine whether a tummy tuck will be the best choice. A patient should be prepared to disclose their entire medical history as well as their expectations. In return, the surgeon will be able to explain whether a patient's expectations are reasonable. This is very important because the more information a patient provides their surgeon, the more likely they are to be happy with their results. Being up front with your surgeon is also important in relation to the risks that can influence the outcome of the surgery as well as the increased risk of complications.

During the consultation the surgeon will discuss not only aspects of the surgical procedure but also the financial aspects of the operation. As the surgery may not be a procedure covered by insurance, finances need to be taken into consideration when deciding on the appropriateness of the surgery. The patient will be given individual instructions based upon their particular conditions in order to prepare them for their tummy tuck. In preparation, a patient will be given dietary guidelines along with other necessary lifestyle changes. These changes may only be temporary but it is essential to follow the instructions to ensure the success of your surgery and to avoid the risk of complications during and after the procedure.

You can find various suggestions in one of the DC Magazine available out there but every single one will surely mention the incredible durability and ease of maintenance.

Many people are interested in the design of a personally customized floor as it is easy to create by combining a choice of colors, colored chips and even glitter options. Psychological Aspects Of Living With Parkinsons Disease

Living with Parkinson’s disease can take its toll on a person not only physically but also psychologically. It is common to feel anxious, angry, discouraged or downright depressed as the brain is undergoing significant chemical changes. Approximately 40-70 percent of Parkinson’s sufferers have experienced bouts of depression, while 20 percent of these have what is considered a major depressive disorder. Anxiety and panic attacks are also common psychological elements of the disease. On average, 70 percent of people who have pre-existing depression also develop anxiety; whereas 90 percent of people who first experience anxiety, fall victim to depression. Dementia afflicts 20-30 percent of Parkinson's sufferers. This gradual decline initially begins with slowness in thought and advances to an inability to properly organize thoughts. Memory loss is widespread as is a general feeling of apathy. There is a silver lining, however. Parkinson’s disease sufferers can develop adequate coping skills to manage the psychological aspects of their condition.

It is important to educate yourself as much as you possibly can about the disease. You should investigate all aspects, including your prognosis, the options for treatment, lifestyle changes that might be necessary and possible side effects. Patients need to take a proactive role in their own lives by taking control of their treatment and making their own decisions.

Maintaining a strong support network goes a long way in preserving psychological health. Always keep open the lines of communication with your spouse, your children and other family members as well as friends. Support groups can also be very helpful in coping with the disease as well. In support groups, you can talk with others who share your same fears and concerns about their condition.

Do everything in your power to eliminate stress at work. Many people can still work on a full or part time basis but must learn to approach their jobs differently. It may be helpful to break your job down into parts or tasks in order to avoid becoming exhausted or overwhelmed by the work at hand. Devise a schedule in which you have the ability to tackle the most challenging tasks when your symptoms are not at their worst. Options you might consider are working from home, also known as telecommuting, making the transition from working full time to part time and/or changing jobs perhaps to do lighter work or to be nearer to home.

For those Parkinson's sufferers who are finding it difficult psychologically to cope with their disease, there are things you can do in order to retain a good quality of life and to also maintain a sense of control over what, at times, feels like an out of control life situation. No matter what your specific circumstances, always try to take time out of every day to participate in things you enjoy. Maybe this means watching a favorite television program, enjoying a bath or calling a friend to chat. Do not underestimate the benefit of doing what you love. It is important to remember that your doctor and/or health care practitioner is on your side and should always be available to answer any and all of your health concerns whether they relate to symptoms, the progression of the disease, or treatments.

Diagnosing Hemorrhoids

If you have been experiencing rectal bleeding and discomfort and think that you may have hemorrhoids, you may want to have your symptoms checked out by a doctor. Knowing what to expect of your visit can help you to feel more comfortable during your examination. Also, by understanding what will occur, you will be better prepared to get the help that you need for your hemorrhoids.

The first thing to consider is that is important to get a proper diagnoses. Even if you are certain that you have hemorrhoids, even if it is not the first time that you have had them, you should still see your physician and be examined. There are several other digestive disorders that could be contributing to the problem -- some of them serious. Rectal bleeding can even be due to cancer, so it is important that you get it checked out.

The first thing your doctor will do is examine the anus and the rectal area. He or she will look for swollen blood vessels. These are a major symptom of hemorrhoids. Your physician will check for lumps in the skin close to the anus. He or she will then will then use a lubricated glove to examine you internally. Your physician will feel for lumps or abnormalities along the wall of the rectum. These lumps and abnormalities can be signs of hemorrhoids.

One of the tools that doctors will often use when examining for hemorrhoids is a proctoscope. This is a hollow tube with a light on it. It is inserted into the rectum and allows the doctor to more easily see any problems in that area. This instrument is most often used if internal hemorrhoids are suspected. Your doctor will be able to examine the lining of the rectum, determine if there is anything unusual or abnormal on the lining of the rectum, and determine if these abnormalities are hemorrhoids.

If your doctor is unable to determine the cause of the hemorrhoids, he ore she has the option of performing a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. In this procedure, your doctor inserts a hollow tube (similar to the proctoscope) into your rectum and colon. In this manner he or she can examine not only the frontal area of the rectum, but into the intestinal area as well. This same tool is what doctors use to diagnose bleeding and discomfort not related to hemorrhoids.

If you have been experiencing symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is important to be examined by a physician to determine that there is not a larger problem. By knowing the cause of your problem, you can treat the bleeding and discomfort and get on with your life. Hemorrhoids don’t have to interfere with your life if you seek treatment now.

Checking Blood Pressure

Getting your blood pressure checked regularly is important. It could well save your life! High blood pressure can be a silent killer in that it can cause other problems such as kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes - sometimes without warning and often with fatal results.

It is precisely because high blood pressure has no symptoms in its early stages that you should get yours checked often. If your readings are normal you can go as long as three years between routine checks. If it is raised, however, your blood pressure should be monitored on a much more frequent basis.

When having a blood pressure reading taken, the patient should sit comfortably in a chair, with his or her sleeve rolled up. It is possible to have a blood pressure checked while lying down, although it is not ideal – the best position for having a blood pressure measurement done is sitting. A health care professional usually performs the blood pressure check, though it can be done by any competent person.

Your health care provider begins by wrapping a rubber-lined cuff around your upper arm. This cuff is part of the pressure measuring device known as a sphygmomanometer. These cuffs used to be filled with mercury, and the pressure would be taken by pumping up the cuff physically.

Nowadays, the sphygmomanometer is electronic, and the blood pressure is read by a small computer within the sphygmomanometer. A stethoscope can be used with some models, but nowadays they are rarely used.

Once the cuff has been wrapped around the upper arm, it is inflated and temporarily stops the blood flow to the arm. The sounds of the person's blood rushing through their artery can be heard through the stethoscope (if one is being used.) Two readings are given: systolic, when your heart contracts, and diastolic, when it is at rest.

It is important that you be totally relaxed when your blood pressure reading is taken, otherwise a false reading can be obtained.

Obtaining a regular blood pressure reading can be a simple but effective way to save your own life.

Using Herbs For High Blood Pressure

For the millions of people who suffer from high blood pressure, finding a way to successfully manage the condition is of paramount concern. Many begin with a strident diet and exercise program in which food with excessive salt, fat, and preservatives are all but eliminated along with nicotine, excessive alcohol, and caffeine. Instead, the diet is infused with natural, whole foods, and increased water. Additionally patients are asked to embark upon a daily regime of physical exercise.

If none of these lifestyle changes are enough to effectively lower blood pressure then often daily blood pressure medication is prescribed. Medication has shown great strides in significantly lowering blood pressure in patients who show a genetic predisposition for high blood pressure and for whom diet and exercise has not worked.

But another natural alternative for many has been herbs for high blood pressure. A variety of herbs found in local health food stores have been enormously affective in lowering blood pressure.

In short, herbs for high blood pressure actually work to dilate blood vessels allowing the blood to flow easily, thus reducing hypertension. Some herbs for high blood pressure – because of their calming agents – work to relax the cardiovascular system thus reducing blood pressure.

To get background information on any herbs for high blood pressure you can get online to find the latest research connecting herb intake to treat hypertension. Log in to chat forums with sufferers of high blood pressure; you’ll likely find several other people in a similar situation who have tried herbs for high blood pressure.

Self-administering herbs and leaving your blood pressure medically unchecked can only get you into further trouble. Consult your doctor before taking anything, including herbs for high blood pressure.

Doing your research, making lifestyle changes including herbs for high blood pressure, and working in tandem with your doctor will ensure you a lifetime of lowered blood pressure and healthy living.

The Gaining Popularity Of Weight-loss Surgery

Weight-loss surgery was almost unknown over a decade ago. Today, it is becoming popular among those who are considered morbid obesity. There are several statistics and measurements that show the popularity of weight-loss surgery and the changes that are made in society from weight gain.

Morbid obesity has become a growing problem in the United States. It is known that over thirty percent of the population is considered morbidly obese, which qualifies them for weight-loss surgery. In relation to this, sixty-four percent of the population are considered to be overweight. In terms of numbers, this is nine million who are morbidly obese, sixty million who are obese, and 127 million who are overweight. Some people are contributing these changes to fast food options, changes in eating habits, and not having the ability to exercise as frequently because of work.

Teens and children are also having problems with obesity. About fifteen percent of the population of children and teens is considered to be either overweight or obese. This causes them to be at risk for several different health problems. While weight-loss surgery does not indicate surgery for those under eighteen, having overweight children often causes parents to begin making changes. When they do, the children then have the option of eating better. They can also follow their parents’ example of living a healthier lifestyle.

Because of the growing numbers of those that are considered to be obese or morbidly obese, weight-loss surgery is also becoming an important option among those who are deciding to move to a healthier lifestyle. With the changes in technology as well as the options available for surgery, those that are severely obese are turning to the idea of surgery. Where other diets and weight-loss considerations have failed, the surgery has proven to have a higher success rate.

There are certain trends that are becoming popular among those considering weight-loss surgery. Those who are middle-aged are looking into weight-loss surgery as a preventative to health problems in relation to weight as well as way to live a longer and fuller life. There is also media attention given to those public figures who champion the surgery, making it more popular.

Obesity in this nation has been growing since the 1980s. Changes in lifestyle as well as in diet are causing a larger population to be overweight and obese. Because of this, weight-loss surgery, although the most drastic measure that can be taken for weight loss, is becoming more popular. The use of new technology during the surgery, as well as the shown success rates from the surgery, are both becoming well known because of the media. Because of this, many people are turning to weight-loss surgery as their best option for losing weight.

Hope For The Future From Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Today thousands of diabetics are finding hope in continuous glucose monitoring. This new experimental gadget now available monitors a diabetic’s blood sugar and informs them if it falls dangerously low. Researchers have been trying to discover this mechanism for years. Now coming on the market, in the United States these monitoring devices will be available by late summer.

Although currently the monitors do not equal the accuracy of blood tests, researchers are hoping that within a couple of years continuous glucose monitoring will allow a diabetic to forgo the finger prick to test blood glucose levels. Currently, if the monitor signals that blood sugar levels are low, it is necessary to confirm with a blood test. At present the monitors are also slow to show rapidly occurring changes that result especially when you exercise. However, with improvements this makers of these monitors are working to make finger lances outdated for all diabetics.

Those who have tried the monitors have reported little discomfort. A patch worn on the abdomen may be slightly uncomfortable when applied due to a tiny wire placed under the skin to measure the cell-fluid glucose. Once the patch is in place, it is comfortable to have on and transmits information to a receiver. The receiver is approximately the same size as a cell phone. One patch can be worn for several days before it needs changing. Just imagine how this can impact the health of diabetics! Control of chronic diabetes-related complications stems from the ability to control blood glucose levels.

The continuous glucose monitoring reports are being looked at with great interst by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. They believe that a the ability to greatly control or even erase diabetes is on the horizon. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation raises funds for research through bake sales and diabetes marches throughout the country. They in search of funds to continue research on these new monitoring devices demonstrating how they will affect hospitalization due to kidney disease, heart problems, or other complications. The JDRF also believes that car accidents can be reduced by alleviating accidents caused by impaired diabetics.

Researchers are working toward the goal of pairing the new monitoring device with insulin pumps. These pumps have been in existence for years and by combining them with the monitoring device, could reduce to a minimum the time needed to control diabetes. One such product was approved on April 13 and is now being offered for sale. It is not fully automatic yet, as the monitoring portion of the device will not be available until later this summer, but its development is promising news for those who are trying to control Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. This device, is actually an external, artificial pancreas that controls blood sugar levels for days. The diabetic would be responsible for programing in upcoming meals and exercise. The glucose-monitoring device has been in development by scientists and researchers since the early 1960’s. They now believe they are nearing that goal.

Caring For Skin Using Skin Care Cream

Age doesn’t make you less of a person. It only does if you are not taking care of your well-being and you start to abandon the realms of healthy living. For those people who are becoming stressed out by visible signs of aging, it’s never too late to start regaining that youthful look and glow.

Two of the most common complaints of people when it comes to skin is having different kinds skin disorders or having visible signs of premature aging. These are what different beauty products are for—to provide solution to people’s common skin problems.

A different kind of cream

It is only natural for people to find ways to maintain and protect their physical beauty. Since not everyone can stay as flawless as babies due to several external factors, more and more products are being uniquely developed depending on the person’s skin type and needs.

One of the most popular skin care products available in the market today is the skin care cream. Since creams are known for being easily absorbed by the skin, countless of skin care creams—mostly anti-aging—are being sold.

According to dermatologists, there are actually over 300 skin care creams and products created to solve different skin problems. Based on long-term reduction of wrinkles, instant reducing of fine lines, antioxidant protective properties that delay skin cell aging, collagen and skin renewal properties and skin smoothing properties, the most common skin care creams include Rejuvinol, Alpha Derma, Idebenol, Strixderm, Avotone, Strivectin-SD, Rejuvenex, and Hydroderm.

Although these skin care creams are known to contain high-grade chemicals and ingredients, which are uniquely formulated to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, most dermatologists still agree that proper skin care can help people maintain younger looking skin.

Here are some helpful tips in achieving that healthy skin:

1. The most basic thing you should learn in caring for your skin is to develop a good skin care regimen. Make sure that you clean your skin every day by deep cleansing it using safe cleansing products.

2. If you are using beauty products such as skin care creams, make sure that you are consistent in using or applying the product/s properly by following the instructions included.

3. Always keep your skin well hydrated by having enough liquid supply in your body by drinking lots of water or juices. Water or liquid intake should be 8 glasses or more daily.

4. If you’re a woman, make facial skin care as your top priority by removing your make-up before sleeping. This would prevent skin pore clogging and congestion. Also, keep your makeup clean by replacing sponges and brushes regularly.

5. Always keep your skin moisturized day and night to keep it from harmful elements, which damage it. Use skin care products that have high vitamin E, shea butter, squalene, and aloe vera contents.

6. Protect your skin everyday by always using sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15. This can prevent premature skin aging, wrinkles, and fine lines. Along with sunscreen, protect your skin by using sunglasses, full-brimmed hats, long sleeved blouses, and slacks.

7. If you’re smoking, quit. Giving up nicotine intake can help your skin regain its lost nutrients.

8. Reduce excessive intake of caffeinated and alcoholic drinks because they only causes dehydration which only lead to cell death.

Why It's Important To Follow A Healthy Diet When Pregnant

Pregnancy is one of the most physically enduring times in our lives, and it is more important than ever to consume a healthy balanced diet. By ensuring a steady supply of vitamins and minerals, as well as balancing your calorie consumption appropriately between carbohydrates, proteins and fats, you should be able to maintain a healthy diet through pregnancy for a healthy mom, and a healthy baby.

The first part of a balanced diet is to consume fruit and vegetables. Fruits are packed with vitamins, which are essential for healthy growth and development. By consuming a variety of different fruits, you can explore your tastes, as well as cover all the bases as far as vitamins are concerned. With vitamins playing such a major role in the healthy function of our bodies, it is imperative you ensure a suitable intake during pregnancy. Additionally, fruits and vegetables provide healthy calories, and are very filling as part of any meal, or for a snack in between.

Another vital element for healthy living during pregnancy is water. Water is an essential component of any healthy diet, and is essential in ensuring you are fully hydrated wherever possible. This can be invaluable in ensuring the effective distribution of nutrients, and will keep your body running smoothly. Combine your water consumption with green tea which has amazing anti-aging properties, as well as detoxifying agents to help cleanse your body. This will ensure your body is kept in tip top shape throughout your nine months.

Also, pregnant women need to drastically increase their consumption of folic acid. Folic acid is a nutrient present in many grains and breakfast cereals, and is essential for promoting healthy growth in babies. By increasing your consumption of folic acid and related products, you can help give your baby the essential elements needed to sustain its growth over the longer term.

Finally, make sure you cut out any alcohol and cigarette smoke. This is highly detrimental to your health, and indeed the healthy of your baby, causing a range of problems in later life. It is imperative that you ditch the drink, and kick the cigarettes to avoid permanently damaging your baby.

Eating healthily during pregnancy is clearly important for the health of your baby, but overall there is no secret formula. By living a healthy lifestyle as you normally would, you can guarantee that your baby is going to be given the best chance health-wise.

Type 2 Diabetes A New Approach

Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. Nearly twenty-five percent of the population of the United States is either already diagnosed with diabetes, or has pre-diabetes or Syndrome X. Two out of three Type 2 diabetics do not have adequate control of their blood sugar level even while taking medications. For the first couple of years a person has diabetes, almost no symptoms are noted. By the time symptoms are noted, when complications set in, it is even harder to control blood sugar levels and take the necessary steps to remain healthy.

Most diabetics do not regularly check blood levels after the first six months following diagnosis. Many more are not keeping to healthy diet plans or getting requisite exercise. Most patients diagnosed with prediabetes or those diagnosed with the disease find their levels are not under control at their yearly check up. Only when they find themselves taking insulin as well as several medications for insulin sensitivity do they realize the importance of exercise and eating healthy.

Despite all the warnings warning of potentially life-threatening problems resulting from diabetes, most Type 2 diabetics are resigned to their disease and are not controlling it. The medical community is concerned about the seemingly unconcerned response are met with by diabetics who are not managing their disease. There are physical, emotional, and behavioral problems that put people more at risk of diabetes. The profiles of patients with Type 2 diabetes include excess fat around the middle, chronic stress, poor self-esteem, negative emotions, and unhealthy lifestyles. If the patient is not in the habit of taking care of their body, it is difficult to get across the importance of doing so after a diabetes diagnosis. Self-care is not one of the priorities for the average Type 2 diabetic. Most are focused on pleasing those around them and refuse to put their health first. Some don’t feel enough self-worth to work on controlling their diabetes despite the fear of life- threatening complications. They find it easier to go into denial or just resign themselves to the disease than to make the effort to manage it. If they do begin down the path to a healthier lifestyle, they often don’t stick with it because they don’t have the necessary support system. If they have had trouble controlling their blood sugar levels, they get discouraged, which leads to acceptance of the disease, and they quit trying to control it.

The most effective approach is a gradual lifestyle change. Behavioral changes are crucial for the newly diagnosed diabetic to succeed in taking control of their disease. The changes don't always have to be strict or drastic. There can be a gradual change in eating healthier meals, decreasing refined sugar consumption, adding exercise, and getting more sleep. The goal is to empower the patient to make choices that are fun, healthy, and personally motivating. It is important to have a support structure in place to encourage and recognize the diabetic's success.

The bottom line is, the patient has to desire better health. You can’t impose good health on anyone. Many who already have diabetes or are predisposed to the disease are struggling with other symptoms of low self-esteem. A group of supporters that understand their issues and suggest better ways to take care of their health may be all that a diabetic needs to aid them taking care of themselves before it is too late.

Measures of preventing hepatitis

Hepatitis is a viral disease that affects the liver and could cause serious damage to it and to the whole human organism if not treated well.

There exist hepatitis type A, B, C, D, E, non-A, and non-B, caused by A, B, C, D, E viruses.

Preventing hepatitis is better than treating it. There are some methods of prevention which you can easy apply: wash your hands every time before eating and after using the toilet; avoid unhealthy living places; when traveling to developing countries you should be very careful with what you are eating and drinking and make sure that the water you drink is not contaminated by sewage. When swimming in the pool, make sure there is good sanitation.

Teach your family members to keep a good hygiene, to practice safe sex or abstinence and to avoid needles.

Also, if one is contaminated wake sure you clean well with antiseptic cleansers the toilet.

There is a vaccine against hepatitis A and it is addressed to those who travel a lot, who work with infected persons, who change frequently their sex partners and to those who already have a liver disease.

There also exists a vaccine for Hepatitis B, but unfortunately there has not been discovered one for hepatitis C too.

The period of incubation for Hepatitis A virus lasts 2 to 6 weeks. Generally a patient who has developed this disease will recover well, without complications, and will not develop the chronic form of the disease. After recovering, the patient will not pass the virus to other persons too.

The period of incubation for Hepatitis B lasts 4 to 20 weeks, and also, 85% to 90%
Of the infected will recover well without any complications.10% to 15% can develop cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis.

For Hepatitis C the period of incubation is 2 to 26 weeks, and 75% to 85% do not recover well and develop chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, even liver cancer. They can also spread the virus to other healthy persons.

Treating hepatitis A with drugs is not necessary because the disease goes away on its own.

There are some drugs useful in treating hepatitis B and C but some are not recommended to the children.

Generally, the treatment is done in hospital, but if you only have a mild form of the disease you can stay at home. Children especially, should eat smaller, more frequent meals and liquids that are rich in calories and proteins. Call the doctor if you see any of these following symptoms referring to a worsening of the liver condition: skin rash, confusion, and itching, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Are you getting enough nutrition form your diet

Why take Vitamins?

Vitamins are micronutrients that are essential to life and healthy living. And, as everyone is aware, failing to get the necessary amounts of specific vitamins can cause deficiency states that are unhealthy and even dangerous.

However, vitamins can play a much larger dietary role in our ongoing quest for health than the FDA's Reference Daily Intakes (formerly known as recommended daily allowances, or RDA's) might suggest.

As many scientific studies now indicate, vitamins, when taken in amounts greater than the RDI’s, may reduce the occurrence of certain illnesses and degenerative disorders, improve the functioning of the immune system, and, perhaps, even allow us to live longer and healthier lives.

Is my “Diet” adequate?

There is an increasing tendency to associate the word “diet” with special food combinations that help you lose weight, but this is not the true meaning of the word: simply put, your diet is what supplies the body with the vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and fiber it needs to sustain life—your life.

Without adequate amounts of healthy nutrients, it is a proven fact that you will become more vulnerable to infection and illness. Eyesight, memory, mood, energy level, lifespan—everything that defines your life experience is directly affected by what you eat. With so many food choices available, it’s important to know which foods are the best sources of nutrients, and how these nutrients function in the body.

Supplements? What are they, and should I be taking them?

Nutritional supplements are important for at least two simple reasons. The first is that many of us rely too much on fast foods and highly processed foods. And the second rationale for nutritional supplements is that evidence continues to mount that many of the nutrients and health promoting substances that we might take to achieve optimum health levels cannot be obtained through normal diet alone.

Of course, any nutrient that is not acquired through normal eating habits may be classified as a supplement. And this includes vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, as well as a host of other nutrients. The key to nutrition is to keep track of and know the amount of nutrients you are getting from your normal eating habits each day and if this is not meeting the RDI’s suggested requirements, you should be taking a multi-vitamin every day.

Here are the values suggested by the FDA, taken from, (“Daily Values” encourage healthy diets, by Paula Kurtzweil, member of the FDA’s public affairs staff)

• vitamin A 5,000 International Units (IU)
• vitamin C 60 milligrams (mg)
• thiamin 1.5 mg
• riboflavin 1.7 mg
• niacin 20 mg
• calcium 1.0 gram (g)
• iron 18 mg
• vitamin D 400 IU
• vitamin E 30 IU
• vitamin B6 2.0 mg
• folic acid 0.4 mg
• vitamin B12 6 micrograms (mcg)
• phosphorus 1.0 g
• iodine 150 mcg
• magnesium 400 mg
• zinc 15 mg
• copper 2 mg
• biotin 0.3 mg
• pantothenic acid 10 mg

Living A Healthy, Long Life

Do you want to live a long life? Do you want to feel healthy as you grow older each day? Living healthy means more than keeping away from junk food. It means taking the initiative to say I care enough for my self and my family that I am going to make sure I am there for them.

Living healthy means you are making choices daily that effect your health in positive ways.

Eat Healthy!

Eating is one the most loved times of human existence. We live to eat and eat to live. But if you're not careful, you can also eat yourself to death -- watching what you put in that body is important. Eating healthy is easier when you plan your meals and chose the right food groups. Don’t avoid the vegetables! They are an important part of keeping you healthy. If you need help planning healthy meals, you can find healthy recipes on many different websites. Cooking healthy foods is not hard once you get started.

Manage Your Weight

Be in control of your weight. Make conscious decisions on whether to loose or gain weight. Its not healthy to look like a twig, but pushing the 20 lbs plus over mark places your body in a position where it asks you to shed those pounds and it needs you to choose how much you will weigh and for that choice to be healthy.

Move, Move, MOVE!

Get up and move! Get off the couch, away from the computer, Playstation and any other electronic “toys” that hold you attention and get active. But its not enough to move, you need to exercise daily, take walks, run jog, bicycle, etc. Exercise is often easier to do when you have a friend willing to share your desire for healthy living, even if that only means taking a daily walk together.

Cholesterol What Is It

We are being made more aware each and everyday of the possible problems that can be caused by cholesterol, it seems that cholesterol is a medical symptom of our modern day way of life.

But what is cholesterol and how can it affect our general state of health.

Well in fact cholesterol is a natural function of the human body and every one of us requires a certain amount of cholesterol to maintain a healthy state of being, the problem only begins when our bodies produce an imbalance.

The problem originates from our bodies requirement for a certain amount of fat intake, some for immediate use and some to be stored for use later on, and this fat intake requires a delivery system to the rest of the body as a whole.

From the initial intake of fat the body starts its processing procedure by absorbing it into the intestines and from thereon into the liver. While in the liver the fat is split into two different types, one being triglycerides and the other cholesterol.

After this transformation has taken place the triglycerides and cholesterol are packed into vehicles for moving them onwards into the fat cells throughout the body using the bloodstream. These vehicles are called lipoproteins.

There are three types of lipoproteins:

1. Very Low Density Lipoproteins (VLDL)
2. Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL)
3. High Density Lipoproteins (HDL)

Under normal circumstances, our bloodstream does a very efficient job of carrying the LDL and HDL Lipoproteins throughout the body. Cholesterol is a waxy; fat like substance that presents itself naturally in the cell walls and membranes everywhere in our bodies. Cholesterol is used by our bodies to produce many hormones and also uses it to produce vitamin D and the bile acids that help to digest fat.

Where problems can arise is when there is an over abundance of cholesterol in our bloodstream. The cholesterol which is deposited by the LDL can lead to a narrowing of the blood vessels. If this occurs, the excess can be deposited in the arteries of the heart, which could result in stroke or heart disease. This is called atherosclerosis. This is why LDL is known as “bad cholesterol.” HDL usually collects the bad cholesterol and takes it back to the liver. That’s why HDL is known as “good cholesterol.”

Cholesterol is not of course the only cause of heart disease, but it can be a contributing factor and this of course is why we should consult our doctors on a regular basis for a cholesterol check so that any required attention to this matter can be taken at the earliest possible time.
